Responsive Design Implementation Guide in 2023
Today, building responsive layouts is no longer based on fixed-width breakpoints. Instead, modern layouts should work on devices of almost any size. However, to my surprise, I still encounter websites that use the responsive design pattern where a container gets a new max-width value according to the viewport width.
The term “responsive” today encompasses a lot. We have media queries that check user settings, as well as modern CSS capabilities that help create responsive layouts without using media queries at all. Responsiveness has evolved, and we live in truly exciting times.
Responsive Design and Boring Websites
It’s essential not to ignore the fact that responsive design is somehow associated with creating dull and monotonous websites. This applies to building themes based on Bootstrap templates.
The internet has seen an increase in the number of similar websites. In early 2016, I came across a tweet where the author discussed the then “responsive design.” In my opinion, it all came down to the popularity of CSS Bootstrap.

As a result, responsive design has become like a simple and predictable process. The current CSS functionality has become so powerful that it allows you to implement anything on all screen sizes.
The Web Environment is Responsive by Default
Let’s start with the main point. Personally, I believe that the web environment is responsive by default. What I mean is that adding a bunch of HTML elements without any CSS works on screens of any size.
Here’s an example of adding a heading, a paragraph, and a list.
Design is responsive by default until we decide to move elements closer together. Let’s assume I added the following CSS code:
It looks good in the image above, doesn’t it? The most interesting part begins when we reduce the size.
So, the web environment is responsive by default until we start applying creativity to our layouts.
Responsiveness to content
By creating CSS that can handle content of various sizes, you can ensure that the UI functions smoothly and doesn’t break just because a user adds different content.
Responsiveness to viewport
Should the component work based solely on the viewport size? This can relate to the website’s header, footer, and full-width sections. They should adapt to the viewport size.
And it’s not just the width that determines the viewport. In some cases, we also need to consider the height.
At the core of building a responsive site is flexibility, which encompasses a lot:
– Container queries
– Wrapping
– Element sizes
– Font sizes
– Spacing
– Available space
– Logical properties
With CSS functionalities like flexbox, grids, and the clamp() function, you can instruct the browser on what to do in different situations. You don’t need to manually work on every detail in the design.
